Weekly letter from St Luke's - 11 October 2024
Dear Parish Friends
There is a lot on this weekend!
On Sunday at our 9am service we will have another of our services at which our young people help to lead by welcoming, reading, praying, helping at the Holy Table etc. We also will admit four of the children to communion. Please pray for Philly, Ada, Oprah and Denzel as they take this important step in their faith journey.
Then at 10.30am there will be a open parish meeting where everyone is invited to share their views about the proposal to remove the pulpit at St Luke's. This is not a debate, but an opportunity to listen to each other, and provide insight to the Parish Council who will be voting on the issue next Tuesday. You can attend and contribute to the meeting by Zoom (with the usual contact details - see below), and also send written comments to the Rector prior to the meeting. More details about the proposal, together with the written responses received to date, are available here.
On Sunday evening, at 6pm, we are all invited to join with other Christians in our area for an ecumenical service at Annerley Baptist Church. Parking is available off Lambton Street. If you care coming, please bring a little food to share over supper after the service. The theme of the service is 'salt and light'.
Finally, I share the sad news that Marc Bannon, a regular member of our 9am congregation, died yesterday afternoon, 10th October. Please pray for Jemma and the rest of Marc's family at this time. Details of his funeral service will be shared as soon as they are known.
Our gospel passage for this Sunday from Mark 10 calls us to ask the question 'what does it mean to follow Jesus?' We have the strange comment from Jesus that "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." which is then completed by Jesus saying "for mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible". Thus we are reminded that, as we are called to follow Jesus, we do so in the power and strength of the Holy Spirit.
Regards
Rev'd Timothy
