Weekly letter from St Luke's - 4 October 2024

Dear Parish Friends

This Sunday, and for the remainder of the Sundays of this church year (that it until the end of November) we will be reading from the letter to the Hebrews. We know almost nothing about the person who wrote this and it does not follow the conventions of letter writing at the time. Instead it is a sermon, calling the recipients to break out of their malaise and remember the message that God had spoken, and indeed that God is speaking. It is a message as relevant to us today as it was to the people of the 1st century. The words of John of Patmos, in the book of Revelation, aptly sums up the message of Hebrews: "Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches."

At our 9am service this week, we will also reflect on the reading from Hebrews, but will do so in the context of remembering St Francis. He too was one who called people to again take seriously the message of the gospel. He reminds us that we are all part of the web of creation, with responsibilities to all. As is traditional, we will celebrate this by welcoming our pets to the service. So please bring you dogs, cats, chickens and other furry, feathered or scaly friends to the service and we will give thanks for their part in our lives. This service will not be a communion service, but will, as usual, be streamed over Zoom. The order of service is available via the link below.

The 7am service will be a normal service following the prayerbook for the 20th Sunday after Pentecost. A link to the week's notice paper is also available via the link below.

A reminder that the notice paper makes note of the intention of the Parish Council to make a final decision over the proposed removal of the pulpit at their next meeting. An open meeting will be held next Sunday 13th October, and more details of what is proposed can be read here. If you can't come to the meeting and wish to make a comment, please send this in writing (e.g. reply to this email) before the meeting.

Regards

Rev'd Timothy
